I am deeply offended by your sexist so called 'safety' video that celebrates an American smut magazine, a magazine that has unashamedly for 50 years sexually exploited young women for men's sexual titillation. Air NZ is thus celebrating and promoting the sexual exploitation of women by men and in the process supporting 'rape culture'. The video is supposed to be compulsory viewing for all your passengers, including your female passengers and children. Air NZ, you are insulting every woman, and actually many men who no longer condone the sexist attitudes of their fellow men, with this video.
You also insult your inflight crew, especially your female inflight crew. Once upon a time your actions would have been ground for a class action suit against you for sexual harassment of staff, for creating an unsafe sexually charged workplace. Your video is worse than the old pin-up calendars that were held up as evidence in the earliest sexual harassment cases.
It is absolutely inappropriate to expose children to your video. By forcing children to watch it you are contributing to the 'sexual grooming' of children, preparing them to acquiesce and be submissive when one day they are approached by someone with sexually exploitative intent. The tone of voice used by the women in the video could have been cut straight out of porn media. Your message to children is that the behaviour displayed in the video is normal and okay - it is not and children will be made more vulnerable to sexual abuse if they think it so.
I believe you are fully cognisant that with this video you are blatantly trying to use sex to 'sell'. I accept that your intelligence may not stretch to an understanding of the negative consequences for society of a national airline openly exploiting women's bodies for your own commercial purposes. Myself, and a number of my colleagues I'm sure, would only be too happy to provide information and education on the prevalence of sexual abuse in New Zealand and the far-reaching negative effects for society.
What is not safe about your video is that children and women are not safe in New Zealand or the Pacific Islands from sexual abuse and rape. Victims of sexual abuse and sexual exploitation travel on your planes and can only be deeply hurt by your message to them. Perpetrators and peadophiles also travel on your planes and it is for them you have made this video. You shore them up and cheer them on to their next sexual offence.
There is nothing cute or funny or culturally appropriate about your video - it is simply inhumane and unjust. I am ashamed for us as a country that our national airline would do this - that our international visitors are forced to see this video. How many young Pacific and Maori girls will be sexually abused by visitors to this country because you have invoked and are trying to resurrect the highly offensive historic representation of 'the dusky maiden' - the sexually free and available Pacific girl.
Stop showing the video and start thinking about how you can make amends for the damage you have done to New Zealand's international image and to New Zealand society. Particularly, how will you atone for the damage you have done to Maori and Pacific girls of New Zealand and the Pacific?
